Introduction
The successful results from laser resurfacing have been evident for a number of years. However, the extreme levels of carbon dioxide laser peels created unwanted and extended periods of recovery for many patients.
Chemical peels, performed for over 3,000 years, have a broad selection of effect from light ‘daily’ peels to heavy changes.
The MICROLASERPEEL introduces the light quick recovery side to laser resurfacing. MICROLASERPEEL patients are able, in almost all cases, to experience improvement in damaged skin with the aid of a topical anesthetic cream and a recovery period of one to five days without cumbersome dressings, downtime, and general anesthesia.
The busy life style of many patients leads them to the decision of a series of light MICROLASERPEEL’s rather than a single significant but traumatic carbon dioxide peel for the improvement of their damaged skin on both face, neck, chest, and hands. Nothing else in the current aesthetic armamentarium can offer the benefits of the MICROLASERPEEL, for safety, controllability, speed, and convenience with near indifference to skin color.
Epidermal and Dermal Resurfacing
1mm = 1000 microns
The epidermis is a robust and resilient structure with an average thickness, on the face, of about 110 microns, (.11mm).
It functions as a physical barrier to protect the deeper dermis, and retain the skin’s hydration. It is often the source of fine lines and discolorations in aging skin.
The MICROLASERPEEL, 10 to 50 microns in selected depth, will not fully penetrate the epidermal barrier of the skin. Therefore the safety, shortened recovery time, and ease of care with these procedures produce a product preferred by many patients and physicians.
For most patients, the average depth of the epidermis is shed every 28 days. It is therefore easy to calculate the recovery time of the epidermis from a MICROLASERPEEL.
What is the MicroLaserPeel?
It is a minimal to full epidermal laser peel that precisely removes the outermost layers of the skin. The procedure is individually tailored to the nature of the problem to be corrected: wrinkles, scars, laxity, keratoses,or pigmentation problems.
Who should consider a MicroLaserPeel?
The patient looking for better results than microdermabrasion or light chemical peels can offer, yet, still has little time for the healing process.
How is the MicroLaserPeel different from Microdermabrasion?
Generally, microdermabrasion only removes the outer layer (stratum corneum, 10-15 microns) of the skin. Patients may become dissatisfied when the perceived results do not equal expense and the number of procedures required. The MicroLaserPeel is a minimal to full epidermal peel (20-50 microns). Because this procedure goes deeper into the epidermis, it is the perfect step between microdermabrasion and deeper peels.
How often does a MicroLaserPeel need to be done?
One procedure could be sufficient for at least 6 to12 months, but additional procedures can be performed as required. A package of three to four treatments may be best for you. Your physician will determine what is necessary.
What can the patient expect?
Smoother, healthier more vibrant skin. You will notice a significant and immediate change in skin texture and tightness when compared to microdermabrasion.
What type anesthesia is used?
A topical anesthetic such as Ela-max, Emla or Betacaine Plus is applied thirty to forty five minutes before the procedure.
Do I have to wear any type dressing or bandage after the procedure?
No! Your physician will prescribe an ointment such as Aquafore or Vaseline. This is used as a barrier to keep the air away from your skin while you grow new epithelium (skin). You will probably use it for one to two days. After that, a moisturizer can be used.
How long is the healing process?
The healing process varies from patient to patient but will generally take from two to four days. The procedure can be performed on Thursday or Friday and you can return to work the following Monday. Immediately following the procedure you will feel as if you have a bad sunburn. You will have minor sloughing and itchiness the following day. By day two, redness will begin to fade and by day three any redness can be easily covered by makeup.
