Male pattern baldness or hair loss is by far the most common type accounting for over 95% of cases. But, you don't have to endure it and we can do something about it. In fact, if you start early enough, over 90% of men will keep their hair with Freedomhealth's Hair Retention programme.

For those of you who have lost their hair already, expert help is at hand with the new technique of Follicular Unit Extraction and reimplantation Hair Transplantation. We don't do this ourselves at Freedomhealth but we do refer to experts in the field. Gone are the days of ugly lacerations across the back of the scalp and doll's head plugs inserted into the front of the scalp. Today's techniques leave no permanent scars and give a nice, natural look. In addition, we're able to secure you up to 20% discount on the cost of the treatment.

Male Pattern Baldness is also referred to technically as androgenetic alopecia. It causes hair loss in males who are genetically susceptible to androgens. It may also occur in women. This happens in around 50 per cent or the population. These individuals are more susceptible to a particular type of testosterone which causes the previously normal sized hair follicles to become miniature versions of themselves. The hair falls out and the male - or female - pattern baldness begins. Because the hair grows in cycles, each cycle results in diminishing numbers of follicles so the baldness progresses.
Treatment of Male Pattern Baldness

There are two drugs which are now in common and safe use in hair preservation and hair regrowth treatments.

The first is finasteride (trade name Propecia). This is 1mg of finasteride and is taken daily for a minimum period of nine to twelve months. Taking it for a shorter period of time is useless in terms of hair restoration. The various growth phases of the hair follicle require a minimum trial period of nine to twelve months. Studies have shown that not only does finasteride 1mg stabilise hair growth in men who are not already bald, but it will also increase the length and diameter of the hair which results in further effective coverage of the scalp.

Finasteride 1mg is a prescription only drug.

Note that men who are already bald will experience little if any improvement in terms of regrowth. This is because the follicles have already been lost.

The second drug is Minoxidil which is available for purchase across the counter at any pharmacist.

Minoxidil is available as a 2% or a 5% solution. The benefits of the 5% solution are superior to the 2% one and there seems little reason really to use the 2% solution.

Minoxidil will increase the size and number of hair follicles on the scalp. Initially - for the first 12 weeks or so - it will cause an increased turnover of hair follicles which will appear to the user as though more hair is being lost. This is just an adjustment phase.

Studies have established that Minoxidil in both 2% and 5% strengths will enhance the number and size of the hair follicles and hairs.

Combining Minoxidil and Propecia together will give superior hair retention and hair restoration effects.
