Default is lifescans worthwhile

I am a 46 years old and a real hypochondriac and constantly worry about cancer. I would like to get a lifescan done, but am nervous that they will more than likely spot quite healthy nodules, which I will then begin to worry about. Many of us have harmless benign tumours, which if left alone have no harmful effect. Would you as doctors, go for regular CT scans to detect for early cancer, or would you respond only to symptoms and then get tests done.

Hello, there!
No, I don't believe that those CT scans would detect a cancer that early anyway, and there is no indication on how often they should be done. Also if one receives too much radiation, that can also increase the chances of certain cancers.
I believe that regular check-ups in the form of a medical examination, blood tests or any other tests (like colonosocopies, tumour markers, etc.), depending on risk factors and family history would be recommended. Obviously reducing the risks with health lifestyle measures is also extremely important.
Best wishes,
Jose
