Default Piles or polyps

I hope you guys can help me. I have had a little rectal bleeding for about 25 years, which I have put down to piles. It is usually related to have a heavy drinking session or too many spices. As soon as my diet improves the problem goes away. I will get bright red blood on going to the toilet on one occasion about every 2-4 months on average. Normally it is only a little blood, but sometimes it can be a fair quantity (tablespoon approx). Recently a relative told me he had polyps and these could turn cancerous, and so I am now wondering I should see a doctor and get checked out. What does this sound like? Many thanks.

Hello, Sam!
Sorry for the delayed reply to your question. I think we have been concentrating too much in the sexual health topics and seemed to have neglected this part of the forum.
Your symptoms are typical of piles or haemorrhoids. However if the symptoms are persisting and there is family history of colonic polyps, it would be wise for you to be checked by your doctor and even being referred for a colonoscopy, just to make sure that there is no other underlying cause for your rectal bleeding.
Best wishes,
Jose
