Default Contaminated food

Dear Doctors,

I need your advice on the following.

While travelling abroad I saw my son and his mum (my ex-wife) who live in another country. I visited their place and was invited to have dinner there (she finished cooking at that time). But while cooking she cut her finger. I advised that she had to apply a plaster on it but she answered that she did not like that but reassured me that I would not eat food with blood.

However, after the dinner when I helped her to put remaining dishes into the fridge I noticed the blood spots on the cheese slices and realised that I could eat the contaminated slices as well! (We were having dinner at the outdoor terrace where lighting was not very good and I might not notice the blood spots on the food. Moreover, one of the cheese slices seemed to me too salty!)

Of course she told me that it was not her blood (but it definitely was blood!), but if it was correct she was HIV negative in any case since had been recently negative tested. (I cannot say that I do not trust her, however we have not lived together for ages and everything might have happened)

I may add that before she put the dishes on the table (and the plate with those cheese slices as well) we had some drinks and talks and maybe 20-30 mins passed when we started eating.

Could you kindly advise if I might have been infected by HIV during this episode and whether I need to get tested.

Thank you very much in advance!

Kind regards,
Alex

Hello Alex,

I don't think that there is any risk at all and to be very honest with you, I think this is an odd question.

I do not think you will have been infected with HIV because:-

1) there is no evidence to suggest your wife is HIV positive - indeed if anything, the evidence suggest that she is negative

2) the cheese will not harbour live virus and so even if there was HIV virus on the cheese it would not be a threat.

Sean

Dear Dr Sean,

Thank you very much for your prompt response! The service, as always, is brilliant!
I much appreciate your time especially bearing in mind that the answer came on Sunday!
And you are, of course, right: I am a bit paranoid about HIV and so please accept my apologies for this question and other odd questions which I may ask you in future.

Many thanks again!

Kind regards,
Alex
