Default Need your advice

I want to share my experience and hopefully put my mind at ease.

In August 2008 I visited a female worker based in London she was white EU lady in her late 30s. She gave me oral with no condom on and then penetrative sex however during this time my condom broke; I estimate I must have been inside her for a couple of minutes when it broke. I have no cuts or sores on my penis; the reason why the condom broke was due to dryness. We stopped immediately and she asked me if there anything she needs to be worried about, I assured her that I was clean as I always use a condom and TBH even for oral, except on this occasion. She ensured that she was clean and get’s tested on a regular basis and uses a condom with all clients at all times.

Two weeks later I had HIV Duo and full STD test, I should have waited for 28 days but I was really worried, these results came back all clear.

I then had a routine blood check with my GP in November 2008 this came back all fine.

I had another routine blood test with my GP in January 2009 this came back all fine.

Do you think I have HIV from my incident I described and the testing been afterward. A friend of mine who is a nurse said if you did have HIV in your blood the initial signs of the virus would be high in your blood as it a new virus and have shown abnormalities in your total blood count and they would have carried out further tests. He also advised that transmission from female to male is very low and harder for the virus to transmit and my exposure time was too little. HE also said the routine blood test would have checked your white blood cells, Lymphocyte and if this number was odd again they would have carried further tests. Since then I have been fine and had the odd cold and I have begin going to the gym training fine and actually gained some muscle size.

Also I have read on your forum which is a great help you say that chance is 1 in 1000 how do you come to this figure, does the virus just jump say on one incident or is this repeated exposure and small amount go into the body somehow? Also does pre-cum from a male have high concentration level of HIV presents enough to transmit to a female?

The reason why I have concern now is my partner recently had a routine blood test and it showed a low white blood count. The GP has requested a film blood test to be done now in the next four weeks. We also use condom and there may have been a few occasion maybe 2/3 times that we didn’t but only for a few minutes I worried that I may passed something on her. I have searched the internet about low WBC and it does show HIV, but then when my blood was done it was fine on both occasion, I am very worried as you can see from this.

Kind Regards

Hello,
Thank you for your post.
First of all I would like to say that the risk of you having contracted HIV in the first place is low. As tou mentioned, lesss than 0.1% or 1 in 1,000. These are statistical figures in the case of the lady was definitely positive. Not knowing her status would lower the risk as statistically she is much more likely to be negative. You do not always would get infected every time you have unprotected sex with someone positive as there are many factors involve: penetrating or being penetrated, being circumcised or not, open access into your blood stream through the lining of the glans, viral load of the infected person, etc.
However the risk for you was not zero and that is why you ought to repeat teh Duo test after 28 days, as the negative test that you had was not conclusive, though very reassuring. Having had normal blood tests, including white blood cells does not mean anything and would not exclude an infection; a good sign, but not a reliable sign, I am afraid.
Best wishes,
José
