17 days ago I had protected sex with, and received unprotected oral sex from, a prostitute.
When she finished with the oral, there was blood on the tip of my penis, and on the shaft. This could've come from me or her.
Today I visited my local GUM clinic, and had a full checkup. The Doctor told me that I needed to revisit in 3 months for a further HIV, Hepatitis and Syphilis screen, regardless of the results due in a week. I asked him about the 28 day HIV test and he dismissed it and told me that I had no choice but to return to the GUM clinic in 3 months, and possibly even again in 6 months, to be sure.
Please can you explain the risks of my exposure to me, and also explain to me if the GUM doctor was correct?
Can you test reliably for HIV, Hepatitis and Syphilis before 3 months? Being able to get any of them out of the way before hand would be a weight off my shoulders.
Hello,
Thank you for your post and welcome to our forum.
The fact that you had protected penetration, but unprotected oral, that would not put you at any risk of HIV infection. There was a risk of Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, NSU, herpes and even syphilis, but not HIV or Hepatitis. However you mentioned the presence of blood without knowing the origin of this and if the blood had got into contact with the head of your penis, there might be a theoretical risk present there, event hough I still beleive this to be extremely low.
Anyhow, nowadays one does not have to wait as long as three (certainly not six) months to have a conlcusive HIV test result. It seems that many doctors have not moved on and still stick to obsolete and out-of-date guidelines. You can get conclusive results after 4 weeks if you have a HIV Duo test, which combines antibodies and p24 antigen. At the same period of time, you can equally have a very reliable test result for Hep B and Syphilis.
Best wishes,
José
