I was recently a bit silly and after a couple of drinks ended up in a massage parlour. The girl performed oral sex on me without a condom this was the only contact.
I'd been tested for everything over 2 months previous to this and have had no other sexual contact in that time.
At day 23 I went to the NHS GUM clinic and was tested for everything (all negative) from reading on here I can see you've told others it's no risk for HIV?
I was told that the test was a 4th generation duo test. I know these tests are licensed from 28 days but as the p24 is already at its highest level by 16 days and not everyone forms antibodys untill 6 weeks would the test have a similar reliability at the 23 day point?
At 31 days after the event I had a mild sore throat with a cough and tight chest the doctor said it was an upper respiratory infection and gave me some antibiotics and this has pretty much cleared up it didnt stop me doing any normal day to day things i.e work and going out and I felt pretty much fine in myself Im assuming this is just coincidental as a couple of friends also had a similar thing around the same time and from what I have read ARS makes one very ill?
The reason I just wanted to clarify all of this Is because I've started going out with a new girl who has also been tested and just want to make sure before things progress im not putting her at risk of anything.
Thank you for your post. You are correct to say that being sucked - insertive oral sex does not carry a risk of HIV infection to the person being sucked.
You have asked:-
"At day 23 I went to the NHS GUM clinic and was tested for everything (all negative) from reading on here I can see you've told others it's no risk for HIV?as above
I was told that the test was a 4th generation duo test. I know these tests are licensed from 28 days but as the p24 is already at its highest level by 16 days and not everyone forms antibodys untill 6 weeks would the test have a similar reliability at the 23 day point?everyone wants to extrapolate the duo test downwards in terms of timings - I understand your logic - and it does have some merit but although the hiv duo test at 23 days is likely to be accurate for the reasons you describe, unfortunately there is no data on this and so all you can say is that you have a negative and comforting result but you cannot rely on it. That said, in your particular case, you can rely on it - but only because you were not exposed in the first place. If you had had a real exposure - unprotected penetrative sex with an HIV positive sex worker - then I would say you should retest at 28 days or more.
At 31 days after the event I had a mild sore throat with a cough and tight chest the doctor said it was an upper respiratory infection and gave me some antibiotics and this has pretty much cleared up it didnt stop me doing any normal day to day things i.e work and going out and I felt pretty much fine in myself Im assuming this is just coincidental as a couple of friends also had a similar thing around the same time and from what I have read ARS makes one very ill?generally acute retroviral syndrome - ARS - will make people very unwell - there are around 30% of people who apparently have mild symptoms only - in our direct experience and we see many people who do have acute onset HIV disease - most will experience very significant symptoms of early HIV disease
So in your opinion I'm guessing any further testing would be for peace of mind only and from a medical perspective this would not be needed? The only reason I say this is that the GUM clinic go with what I can only assume is NHS guidelines saying insertive oral sex is a very low risk but in your view no risk. So hopefully I can go into this relationship with a clear mind?
