Hi 18 months ago I had a eye splash of sperm and I was concerned as I didn't know the guy so I went to a GUM clinic in Brighton and was given PEP Trivuda andKaletra I think were the drugs. I took them for 26 days and on the 26th day I developed very loud Tinnitus. I stopped taking the drugs but it did not go away. Went to a ENT specialisit and was told it was probably permanent they thought it was coincidental that it happened whilst taking PEP. 18 months on and some therapy to deal with the tinnitus I was coping ok with it and even forgetting about it most times. Last Sunday 11 days ago I had an encounter with a guy I have met just once before. He tried to fuck me bareback but I stopped him, put a condom on him and he started to fuck me. He came out condom was slipping off but I put it back on him. I turned round so my back was to him and he fucked me again, when he withdrew ,after about a minute, the condom was on the floor. I said to him what happened how was the condom on the floor he said he took the condom off once he withdrew to wank, this just seemed too fast, I didnt think it was possible for him to get the condom off so quickly. My ass was also pretty wet, it could have been lube but I smelt it and to me it smelt like sperm. (sorry to be so graffic) He swears to me that the condom was on all the time he wanked and orgasimed outside me he said he regularly gets checked and he is negative however he wont give me his date of birth which is all the gum clinic needs to check his status, he is now ignoring my calls. I went to a gum clinic and told them this story, they thought there was a reasonable risk so put me on pep the same drugs. Within a day my ears started to hurt and the Tinnius was very loud I started to get dizzy turns and a fullness feeling in my ears which I havent had for months. I went back to the clinic they took me off the Kaletra and put me on Trivuda (sorry if the spelling is wrong for these drugs im in a internet cafe and havent got them with me)Reyataz and Norvir all three once a day, the tinnitus and pain continued to get worse. I was told to stop taking the trivuda and take the Reyataz and Norvir twice a day, starting today. I am really concerned that the drugs are somehow damaging my ears and the tinnitus will get much worse and be loud like it is just now forever, I have been living and coping (just) with Tinnitus for 18 months now and I dont think I will be able to cope with it getting worse. Have you heard of HIV medication causing damage to the ear? What do you think the danger is of me contracting HIV from the above encounter? I want to stop taking pep now after 11 days is this stupid? Im at my wits end I do not want my ears to have any more damage, but I also do not want HIV, what should I do?
I am surprised and dismayed that you still have not replied to my post particularly as you accepted £15 from me. If you are having software problem can I suggest you do not charge the £15. i look forward to your answer asap!
I'm sorry we've disappointed you. I do understand the frustration. The problem with the software problem was that we were unaware of it and then when we became so there was a considerable backlog to clear. I am sorry.
With regard to your questions:-
1) Tinnitus with anti-retroviral drugs. I am not aware of this being a side effect and the literature does not contain reference to it. I think though that tinnitus without any explanation is common and very troubling and it is likely to be unrelated to the medications. However, equally, we do discover drug side-effects which might be unexpected and so it is a possibility even though I have not heard of it.
2) I think the hospital was correct in putting you on PEP. I am unable to make any more assessment of the risk than you have. Personally I would not draw any adverse conclusion from the other guy not returning your calls etc. He may just be freaked by your intensity. Equally I do not think it unreasonable that he did not give you his date of birth so that you could access his results.
