Default Possible semen got into the eye

Dear Dr Sean and Dr Jose,

First of all I would like to thank you for your brilliant work at the clinic and on this forum, this is fantastic!

Secondly, I want to obtain a piece of advice from Dr Sean since Dr Sean considers the risk of acquiring HIV through getting infected semen into eyes even greater than the risk of swallowing sperm (I believe that I understood correctly what I have found on this forum and unfortunately that really made me nervous).

This is my story. I have recently visited a public toilet (not an unusual situation!) and entered into a toilet cabin immediately after a man of middle ages left it. I bolted the door and realised that the bolt was sticky! But before I realised that I accidentally itched my eye (the eye was irritating at that time!) by the same hand which I bolted the door.

If the worst scenario was realised: the man was HIV positive and was masturbating in the cabin (I presume that the latter happens and not very seldom!), he would open the door by his hand soiled with his semen (this might explain why the bolt was sticky!) and his semen would may get through my hand into my eye.

Dear Dr Sean, could you please kindly advise if I might be contaminated with HIV through this way or I am getting a bit paranoid about HIV? Thank you very much for your understanding but I have really got very nervous!

Kind regards,
Alex

Default Possible semen in the eye and HIV risk

Hello

Thank you for posting and thank you for your nice comment about our Forum.

This story is reminiscent of some posts I get from a fellow who identifies as "punched not bored" but you have a different name so I'm assuming not him.

I think on balance and with all due respect to your good self you've got this entirely and implausibly out of proportion.

Yes, I consider ejaculation of semen from an HIV positive individual into an eye to be a high risk event and yes, I do classify it as of greater risk than oral sex by a long shot. However, you need to remember the context of that is sexual activity with someone who then ejaculates into your eye.

In your case you have a diminishing series of coincidences which are really propelled by fear of HIV than by a realistic risk.

In your case I'm not persuaded that there was a risk at all - and certainly nothing we need to get upset about. So in brief, and again with all due respect, you are completely and irrationally paranoid about a non-event...in my humble opinion.

best wishes, Sean

Dear Dr Sean,

I am very sorry but may I re-formulate my previous question please. If I touched infected semen or vag./breast fluid and then immediately touched my eye by the same hand/finger would it be a risk of acquiring HIV in this case?

Thank you very much and sorry again for the previous post!

Kind regards,
Alex

Default Possible HIV risk from semen in the eye

Hello again,

the further info you supplied does not change my view and does not in my mind make any difference at all.

best regards, Sean
