Default Question

Hiya.

Recently i had a multiplex hiv test 12 days after contact carried out by yourselves. I also had tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia. All of these came back negative.

I just wanted to know as to false negatives, could having Syphilis cause a false negative on the hiv multiplex?

Syphilis was not something i was tested for.

Good Morning,

Thanks for the post - the answer will depend largely on the "exposure". We tailor our advice according to the crcumstances presented. So for example, if you had a zero risk HIV exposure - then although you might worry about it we would not - and consequently we would not advise retesting. If on the other hand you had an extremely high risk exposure then we would likely suggest retesting at 28 days with an HIV DUO.So if you can elaborate a little that would be helpful. You'll appreciate we do tens of thousands of tests every year so the detail you've given doesn't ring any bells.

The gonorrhoea and chlamydia is good and accurate. Syphilis will not interfere with the multiplex result.

best regards, Sean

Hi.

Im the same person as the worried post that has been locked out. You stated that i didnt in your opinion have an exposure and so the multiplex at 12 days would be fine. I just emailed back regarding syphilis because i didnt have a test for that and wondered if for example if i did have syphilis then would that of affected the multiplex test for Hiv and possibly given a false negative?

Sorry for the further emails

Thanks

Thats fine - no problem at all.

You would not have been tested for syphilis at 12 days because its too early. But, in the extremely unlikely event that you did have syphilis then it would not have interfered with the diagnostic accuracy of the HIV etc multiplex. We have many patients who have had syphilis, HIV and hepatitis C all correctly and appropriately diagnosed at the correct time.

You are fine.

best wishes, Sean

Hi.

Thanks again for the quick reply. On previous posts you said to me that i had a non event in your opinion and a very acurate test, having a multiplex at 12 days and so i need no futher testing. Which does fill me with confidence. I have just always been a worrier and so "what ifs" keep ringing around my head!

Im extremely anxious and stressed about the whole thing at the moment and causing myself to think i have symptoms when i probably dont.

Can i just say the service you provide on the forum but also in the clinic is very high and you do an excellent job!

Regards
