Default strange symptoms

Dear Doctors

I am a usually fit and well, non smoking 30 year old. However, I had a single encounter with another english female (who I think sleeps around quite a bit), and the condom split.

Several weeks after I had a mild fever and my neck started aching. The mild fever lasted for a ocuple of days then subsided, but the neck has continued to ache for 3 and a half weeks now. About 10 days ago I develpoed new symptoms:
swollen lymph nodes in neck, aching behind ears, some cracking in ears when I swallow, dry peeling skin on fingers, yellow stuff at back of throat which disappears every time i drink water but then comes back, aches and pains in shoulders, elbows, wrists and my right knee especially when going down stairs.

However, I dont feel unwell particularly, I dont have a sore throat, I dont have a blocked or runny nose or any other symptom that I would expect to have if I had a cold.

I have had 3 negative HIV Duo tests (20, 31 and 37 days). But my symptoms persist, and all my GP said was, the symptoms are strange, and that its probably viral and will clear up. His words "strrange" concern me, and 3 and a half weeks seems along time for it not to go.

My questions are:
1. Do you think these symptoms could be ARS/HIV?
2. If not, do you have any thoughts on what could be causing the symptoms I describe, as my GP was no use.

Thank you very much in advance

Hello, there!
With all those negative HIV Duo tests at those periods, you can be completely reassured that these symptoms have absolutely nothing to do with HIV or ARS. In any case, they are not typical of ARS.
There are million of viruses and they can affect us in many different ways. My advice would be for you to have a full blood screening, including viral titres, if your symptoms persist.
Best wishes,
Jose

Hi

Thank you very much for your kind reply.

This morning I have woken up and there is like a slimey white mucous on the roof of my mouth, back of tongue and the little bell shape thing that hangs down. My mouth and throat were very very dry. It disappears just lie the stuff of the back of the throat with a sip of water. Does that sound like Oral Thrush or something else? Is Oral Thrush a symptom of ARS?

Also one last questionm and I wont take anymore of yoru time, does the above symptom combined with what I said above, provide any more clues as to my problem?

thank you again

Hi, again!
It could be thrush, which only happens in less than12% of cases of ARS, but it can happen more frequently when you are run down, stressed, taking antibiotics for other infections, using too strong mouthwashes very often, using asthma inhalers, etc.
I think you are so stressed out, that that is most likely the cause of all your symptoms. You need to forget about HIV as you definitely do not have it.
Best wishes,
Jose

once again, thank you for replying Jose.

I have today gone to see my GP again, and she has prescribed Amoxicillin, as she thinks it might be my maxillary sinus which is infected somehow. My blood test result was back and my FBC was five, live was functioning perfectly, my lymph count was I think 1.2 rather than 1.3 or something!?!? She said it was a fraction off normal, so I would assume that is a good indicator it is not ARS either as I woudl have assumed that the lymph count would be way off normal?? Also she said that my llymph ndes do not feel swollen.

She also didnt think the clear/white stuff I had in mouth this morning was thrush as it disappeared as soon as I started swallowing, and was no signs of anything there at lunch time.

I think you are right with the stress, I think i frst feared HIV the night before I started to have the aching in my neck as I started to read about the possible symptoms. Since then the symptoms have changed slightly, but stayed similar for 4 weeks.

I am going to try and get on with things now, and hope the amoxilicin clears anyhing up. If not, maybe I could come to freedom health again but for an insti test at 7 weeks and also get checked over by you guys just to finally put any worry at rest!?

Thank you, and I hope to not need to come and see you in the best possible way!! :-)

Hi, again!
Couldn't replied earlier; it's been a very busy day!! It sounds like a simple sinus infection, which should settle with antibiotics. In the case of ARS, the blood tests would be much more abnormal as you say and your doctor would ahve felt enlarged glands, and she did not. Also thrush would only disappear after having treatment and not on its own. And you had all those negative HIV duo tests. Forget about HIV, you don't need any further testing.
Best wishes,
Jose
