3 days after performing cunnilingus on a sex worker and protected intercourse I developed a sore throat. Doctor gave me amoxicylin for the throat infection however within days I was having serious urinary problems. Low flow, trouble starting to pee, feeling I hadn't finished, feeling there was pee in my penis still, abdonminal pain, a little left testicle pain and lower back ache. Doctor doesn't know about the sex episode and feels it might have been a kidney stone that has now passed. I did Urine, blood and CT scan with no bacterial culture, just a little protein in my urine and no stone (they say it may have passed). Three questions:
is this episode just bad timing or am I at serious risk of having an STD ? The symptoms seem to be more kidney than anything else
what is the realistic chance that the throat infection after 3 days was an STD and not strep throat ?
does the urine test showing no bacterial culture mean I dont have Chlamydia nor Gonhorrea ?
I had a blood test two weeks after the episode which was negative for HIV, Syphilis and Hep, how reliable would this be ?
Hello,
Thank you very much for your post and welcome to our forum.
I think it is highly unlikely that you contracted an STD in your urethra if you used a condom for penetration and this reamined in place and intact. However the symptoms described could be consistent with Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea or any other type of urethritis and it might be a good idea to get tested. A simple urine sample would not necessarily identify any of this, but it would show presence of white blood cells. I am not sure if this was the case with your sample. If it sis not, then I would think that your symptoms would not be related to any infection and they would be more of renal origin.
The throat smptoms could certainly be linked to throat Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea following the oral sex performed and coudl give symptoms after just a few days. Amoxicillin would not treat these and I think that you ought to get a throat PCR swab to test for these just incase, as they would only be treated with specific antibiotics.
You did not put yourself at risk of HIV or Hepatitis. There was a possible risk of syphilis and you would need to be tested at least after 4 weeks of the epsiode. Two weeks would be too early for syphilis and the other blood borne viral infections.
Best wishes,
José
Many thanks for your answer. The blood test for white blood cells etc was done some 5 weeks after the event.
The white blood cells were normal.
Does this mean no STD weas contracted from this
event ?
Many thanks for your quick reponse and congratulations on an excellent forum. A few further questions if I may ?
The fact that the sore throat cleared up well with Amoxicylin would be a good sign then that this was not a throat STD ?
I had a further blood/urine test done 5 weeks after the event (although not specifically for STDs). This showed no abnormal white cells in blood and none in the urine. They did a urine culture which showed no bacteria growth. The only issues were a little cloudiness in the urine, density of 1030 (a little high) and protein in the urine. Does this mean no infection of any STD type including throat ?
Where I live they say that throat STD is all but impossible, just how common is it ?
Also if I had a throat STD and had unprotected sex before the sore throat broke out how contagious would this be ?
I'm afraid I flatly disagree with the advice you have been given locally.
Oral transfer of STD is common.
The cunninlingus may have produced the symptoms you complain of but the only way to know that is to have a test of your throat. Amoxicillin may have an impact on oral STD's but it cannot be relied on to do that.
Also, the urinary symptoms, as already described by Jose, are not descriptive of an STD particularly but also they arte not ruled out by a simple urinalysis. If you suspect a UTI then it should be tested for specifically.
