Default HIV Concern

Hi,

I had gay sex with a guy last night after we left a club and I went back to his apartment. I was really drunk but I remember giving and reciving oral sex and then giving him protected penetrative sex for a really short time. I was really drunk, and it might just be my mind playing tricks on me but I'm paranoid the condom might of broken. He said he hadn't had sex with a guy before, even though he was also really drunk. Am I at risk of HIV? Do I need to take the PEP drug, bearing in mind that I'm still within the 72hr time frame?

Default HIV concern

Hello

The anal sex seems to have been very brief - and the condom apparently stayed on even though you are now concerned by it.

The guidelines for use of PEP would suggest that you should be offered it but that it is not necessarily recommended - ie your choice if you are particularly anxious.

A different way around this would be for you to ask the other guy to have an HIV test - if his test is negative then it would be extremely unlikely that you:-

1) have been exposed to HIV or

2) been infected with HIV.

If I was in your circumstances I would not take PEP but have an early RNA PCR HIV test at 10days from this event.

best wishes, Sean

At 7 days the HIV PCR RNA test has a reliability of about 99%; at 10 days, this increases further to 99.5%, with a similar figure for Hepatitis C also.
Kind regards,
José
