I was just wondering.
If I meet a girl and we get tested for HIV using the standard 3 month test that is on offer on most places and the tests come back negative, is there any chance of getting the virus. This may seem like a silly question but my concern extends to the fact that there is a window period for HIV to be detected. If it is not detected by the test and lets assume the person was infected sometime within the previous 3 months what are the chances of getting the virus?
The reason for my question is that the HIV duo 28 day test is not available everywhere in the world and as I travel internationally quite frequently I usually take any girl I meet for a blood test as well as using condoms before I engage in any sexual activity. Am I getting a false sense of security from doing these tests.
Any advice is appreciated.
Hello, you've described the dilemma very well. If I tested HIVnegative today using an INSTI test I might still be an evolving HIV positive. Similarly using an HIV DUO.
Very new HIV positives are likely to be highly infectious so at their most effective in terms of spreading HIV.
The best way forward for you is to always use condoms for penetration and to have regular STD/HIV check if you are having many new partners.
