Five days ago, my boyfriend found out that he was HIV+. Right away I had a rapid test for HIV the next day, and the result was HIV-. However I have to wait until the window period (this has been killing me and turned my life upside down) elapses to take another test. He had not known that he could get HIV after a blackout from a bar and spent a night with some guy. He did not remember what happened that night and all he heard from the guy was 'Nothing happened'. So, I did know my boyfriend had HIV until 5 days ago.
I was always on top (inserted him) of him using a condom. However, the condom broke once around 3 months ago. I could feel it, so I stopped and replaced a new one. By that time I realized there was no blood and I did not ejaculate yet.
Less than a month ago, I gave him a blowjob and I swallowed his sperm.
After finding that my boyfriend has HIV, I am so depressed and worried for both him and myself because I am not sure if my risk of HIV infection is high. I have done a lot of reading from Internet, and most of them said that it is still a very low risk to be HIV infected by swallowing sperm, but I have not found much about risks of infection for condom breaking.
Could you please give me some advice for my situation right now? Thank you very much for you time.
I'm sorry to hear all that - sounds a nightmare for you.
I think you'll be fine.
The condom breakage episode is covered by your rapid HIV test the day after you discovered he was HIV positive so I don't think you need worry about that.
The risk of you contracting HIV through swallowing semen is tiny if at all and several good studies have tried to demonstrate a link between the two but failed. Again, I think you'll be fine.
There are several other options for you. The Terrence Higgins Trust THT - runs excellent free one to one counselling sessions for "discordant couples" - where one is HIV positive and the other HIV negative - and they also publish leaflets which I believe you can download from their website as PDF's.
The other option is to find a clinic like ours where all the doctors are very experienced in this circumstance and can chat it through with you.
Thank you very much for your response. This really helps me a lot to overcome my anxiety at this moment so that I can focus on my study. Since this nightmare happened, I have not been able to focus on anything even I quit my work-out, and felt lazy to eat.
As an international student, this just puts more pressure on me. I just hope that I will be fine so that I can find a job after I am done with my study and stay in this country because I want to take care of my boyfriend.
