Default advice

Hello I am looking for some advice
I had unprotected sex and oral sex in Thailand with a thai woman (not in the sex industry 13 weeks ago) and then again in the london with a uk woman (9 weeks ago) I developed tonsillitis 4 weeks ago and had badly infected tonsils with white spots at the back top of my tongue and a small blood spot on the inside of my cheek. I had a sore throat for a few months prior to this before having unprotected sex in thailand. During the tonsillitis I had fever, sweats and muscle pains for about a week and a sore throat/muscle pains and tiredness has continued since the tonsillitis. My GP did a HIV test and a glandular fever specific test 1 1/2 weeks ago, the HIV test came out negative and the glandular fever test weak positive. The HIV test was 11 ½ weeks after unprotected sex in Thailand and 7 ½ weeks after unprotected sex in the uk. My doctor has advised that the HIV test should have picked up something after 7 ½ weeks and that he is pretty certain everything is ok.

I am worried that first of all as I don’t know what test was undertaken for HIV if this should indeed have picked something up , i have read that antibodies cannot be picked up until after the primary infection has been resolved. I know I need to test again at 12 weeks to be sure but would like your advice.

Also as to the glandular fever specific test that was weak positive I have also read that these are not 100% conclusive and am worried that there might be some connection with the results of this test and early HIV infection.

maybe i read too much but would like your advice.

Hi, there!
I would think that the test performed by your GP was an antibody test. This could certainly be considered conclusive for the Thailand encounter, but not fully conclusive, though highly reliable for the UK encounter. Bearing in mind that it was a single episode of penetrative vaginal intercourse with a lady of unknown status, the estimated risk would be very low and most people who would have been infected, would have shown antibodies already at seven weeks. Therefore I think your GP is all right to say that you are negative and there is no reason to worry about. I honestly do not think you need to worry, but if you really want complete peace of mind, you can always repeat the test in four weeks, even though I am sure it will still be negative.
It is possible that those symptoms of tonsillitis were just that, tonsillitis, but there is also the possibility of glandular fever. No need to be concerned about any kind of interaction between the tests. The HIV tests were totally reliable even in presence of glandular fever.
Best wishes,
Jose
